Day 18 - Kuwait
Today was a better day. Class ran well, and I fully enjoyed every moment of it. For lunch I treated myself to a nap in front of the TV which was tuned to the Olympics - men's kayaking and canoeing competitions. After class I made a run back to town and picked up dinner for some of the students who didn't join us on our field trip to the Kuwait Towers. We had a great time chatting over salmon teriyaki, chicken kababs and fried chicken. It was an eclectic menu, but each of us ate what we ordered.
Of course there's no better way to follow up an eating session than with exercise. Sure enough, at 7:15pm Leah and David were already at the tennis court. We played some 2-on-1 games which still allowed me to work up a sweat. I commend them both for being so patient with me as I still try to develop a serve. Since I have no formal training in this game, I figure as long as I'm running and sweating I'm accomplishing my goals. Well, they noticed my uncanny ability to chase down balls hit anywhere. I didn't always return them but I got there. So they tagged me with the nickname, "Wheels".
I'm kind of flattered. I mean, I've had a quick wit, I'm quick to jump to conclusions and I'm quick to lose my temper. But nobody would ever put "quick" in a list of reasons to pick me in a playground ball game. So I smiled, figuring that if I don't have technique I can at least run to wherever the ball is, swing the racquet and hope something good happens.
And best of all, I'm exercising.
I'd give you a score, but I don't remember what it was or how we even kept score. All I know is that I got a good workout just getting to the tennis court. And once there, I was able to keep my heart rate up for the better part of an hour.
Tomorrow is the last day with this group of students. I think I'm going to miss them. When we first started the class two weeks ago, there was a bit of distance between them and me. But we've warmed up to each other as we understand where the other person is coming from. I pray God's best and his care for them as they return to their workplaces.
After class tomorrow I'll be flying to Dubai for a long weekend. It will be great to meet up with my brother and his family and spend time with them. I'll be sure to post some more pictures while I'm there.
As part of going to Dubai, I'm checking out of my hotel for the weekend. I just finished packing up the room. It's remarkable to note the extent to which I settled in. I had things in just the right places. It's a touch of the old OCD (or CDO as we prefer, since that puts the letters in alphabetical order). Goodnight from Kuwait - the next post will be from Dubai. Talk to you all on the other side.
Blessings,
Khalaf.
